Your Wedding Video is Basic
So I’ve studied a lot of wedding videos from industry leaders like Jake Weisler, Sculpting with Time and others who set a really high bar. There are a whole lot of aspiring videographers that attempt to create films that match these industry giants. But, that’s a problem. Why? Everyone has similar content, there is little uniqueness within the industry. This means the video you get from Joe may look very similar to the video from Janice.
As wedding videographers we should cater to you, the client, and help create a version of your day that you can look back on. So that you can remember your day with fondness and joy. It’s hard with all the wedding planning to sit in a meeting with your videographer and describe exactly what you want from your film. That means the creative burden is on me, on us, which is exactly where it should be! If it is our burden to be innovative, then why are our videos all the same in look and feel?
As creatives, we should each have a unique sense and style so when you go shopping, you’ll have options! I personally have attempted to expand what your wedding video will include. I believe it should showcase your love story, from beginning to end. The engagement to the end of the reception. You spend months, years, or decades building a relationship with a person, growing with them until you realize you want to spend forever with them. All of that history is important, all that history will make your wedding day intimate and special. From your first date to your “I Do’s” and all the intimate moments in-between all work together to create a cohesive love story and I believe your wedding video should capture pieces of this history.
Why bother including that history?
Imagine with me a scenario. It’s a few months after your wedding and your enjoying newlywed bliss. Speaking with one of your coworkers who couldn’t make it, you take out your phone to show off your event. If you booked Joe or Janice, who follow the “gold standard” set by those industry giants, you’ll have a trendy video that will show (probably in this order): an opening shot of the venue, getting ready moments (including the dress hanging in the window), walking down the aisle, the vows, first dance, both tosses, cake cutting and the big send off. That’s it. A generic highlight reel that your coworker, if married, also has. The only difference between both videos? The people in it (and maybe the location)
Basic = Unmemorable
Your work friend didn’t learn much about your relationship nor did your video leave a lasting impression because it’s basic-ally like everyone else’s. Your coworker may get a sense of you and your spouse’s personalities but they can’t see how it manifests in your interactions with each other. They saw a wedding and made the assumption that you must be in love because, well, you got married. Unless you’re into the the on trend videos, you should find a videographer videographer that can create something so uniquely belonging to both of you that everyone can see WHY you’re in love. And since this is my blog, here comes some unashamed …
Looking to create a unique wedding film?
As a part of my services I interview both of you and learn your love story. I gather interesting anecdotes and moments that you find special in your relationship. On the day of the wedding I interview close family and friends and get their perspective and then I can piece together your love story. I can create a more in depth story if you choose to do your engagement session with me. I want to create a film that has the traditional cinematic blockbuster elements weaved together with all the moments that make you as a couple unique. A documentary style video where you, and others, will see how your love blossomed to matrimony.
If this sounds like something you would love to experience, you know where to find me.
